Healthy Eating Program

Norman Johnston strives to foster an environment of healthy eating across all areas of the school. Research shows that students who eat well learn better and engage positively in a school community. Norman Johnston received a $50 000 healthy foods grant to help us provide access to healthy foods to our students. The following pillars to our Healthy Eating program increase the access to healthy foods all day long:

Breakfast Program (8:00 - 8:25):

Students have access to a nutritious breakfast every day before classes start. See Brandon in the Breakfast room!

Office Snacks (all day):

Healthy snacks are available in the front office all day long ranging from cheerios to homemade granola bars.

Food & Nutrition Courses:

Students in our prepare food using fresh, homegrown produce from our Garden program and provide healthy options to the student body.  Foods students also cater events for school events including BBQs, leadership activities, band performances and graduation. The following credits can be completed at Norman Johnston:

  • HFN1O/2O
  • HFA4C
  • HFC3E
  • HFL4E (linked to NJ’s healthy eating camp)
  • HFA4U

Gardening Course and Program:

Norman Johnston has been growing its own produce for over 3 years now and has been providing students with practical skills to be able to grow their own food at home. Norman Johnston is partnered with “Growing up Organic” and “Just Food Farms” and will continue to grow real food and increase student knowledge of where food comes from. NJ recently received a grant from the “Whole Kids Foundation” to expand our current garden beds and provide more opportunities for students to play in the dirt.  Currently we have 300 square feet of useable garden beds and three hydroponic towers in classrooms where salad greens and herbs are grown. See Laura for more details!

Healthy Eating Camp (Annual event):

Norman Johnston runs an annual 2 day Healthy Eating camp at a local outdoor facility. Students learn how to plan, shop, and prepare healthy low cost foods. Students who attend healthy eating camp complete part of an HFL4E credit and can complete the credit by helping with Foods events and completing the additional in-school assignments. See Sally for more information!

Salad Bars (Tuesdays & Fridays):

Norman Johnston is a “Farm to cafeteria” school and provides a weekly salad bar to students available at Chez norm.

Smoothie Days (Mondays & Fridays @ 9:45am):

Twice a week NJ makes Smoothies for students at the first break. Smoothie days are funded using a Metro- Green Apple grant
