Each year, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board Student Recognition Awards celebrate excellence in student leadership. Students are chosen by their principals and vice-principals for their demonstration of initiative, supported by the will to succeed, the dedication to finish what they started, and the commitment to achieve their personal best.
Congratulations to this year’s winner from Norman Johnston Secondary Alternate Program,
Eli G.!
Eli G. arrived at Norman Johnston in 2021, and began setting himself apart and earning recognition right away. Eli is a conscientious, hard-working student with a consistently positive attitude, and a strong advocate for self-awareness, acceptance, and celebration. He took the lead on designing and installing a bulletin board for Trans Day of Visibility, encouraging other students to participate and turning it into a project that students invested in and felt proud of. Eli is a champion for equity and inclusion, but also encourages others to take part in athletics, school-wide events, field trips, and other activities. He is the type of person who makes it a priority to ensure every person he meets feels seen, heard, and knows they have an ally in their school. He takes the time to connect with students, and provides a safe space for many to be themselves. Eli often creates connections between students and teachers, helping new students learn to commit, persevere, and acknowledge their successes. Eli is so deserving of the Student Recognition Award - the world is a better place because he makes it better. Eli is heading into the Biotechnology program at Algonquin College in the fall, and the staff and students at Norman Johnston wish him nothing but the best!
